Have any of you guys seen or used a Skinner Peep Sight?

I heard about them through an Aussie forum and looked them up.

They look really well made and Tim Skinner was very quick to reply to my email and very helpful.

So on that basis I have ordered one of his barrel mount peep sights to put on my Henry.

I got an email from him this morning. He said he'll post it monday, so hopes I'll have it by the weekend, but said that Customs might hold it up a while. So he said, in that case, it might take two weeks to arrive.

I paid $48 + $10 postage (US dollars) for the blued steel sight. The conversion to AU dollars through Paypal was $67.13

Lyman, now offers peep sights for most all lever guns and bolt actions. I was just looking through their catalog tonight.

http://www.lymanproducts.com/lyman/sights/90-mjt.php

They are cheaper in the catalog though.

I haven't fitted it yet. There are pics of it in the thread on my Henry though. It took 2 1/2 weeks to arrive from the US, so I only received it in the middle of last week.

I have to file the dovetail down a bit. I don't have a small triangle file to that with, so need to pick one up.

The dovetail is supposed to measure .375". When I measured it, it turned out to be .388".

I have removed the Henry's rear notched sight. So it's just a matter of filing the new sight down a bit then fitting it. This probably won't happen before next week some time though, as I have the dragster trailer here doing some work on it. I'll be taking that back to the city this weekend.

Not trying to derail your thread Ep, but yesterday at the range a guy was shooting a reproduction 'Quigley Down Under' rifle (Sharps) and let me shoot it one time.

Caliber .535. The shell with bullet was as big as my index finger.

It had a rear peep site with a tiny pinhole to look through and a front post that was as thin as a needle. I hit an 8 inch pie plate at 100 yards dead center elevation, and a bit to the left windage. I could barely see it, but I just followed the guy's instructions and did it.

These old peep sites are almost as good as scopes, once you learn how to use them.

I have heard good things about them from a few guys, who fitted them to various Marlin 39A and 336's. Also a couple of guys who fitted them to Henry 001's.

So I reckon it should go well.

I bought a small triangle file yesterday. But drove up to the city tonight. So I won't e able to file it down and fit it until sometime next week.

I used to shoot full bore about 9-10 years ago and that is done with only peep sights, at ranges from 400 yards out to 1,000 yards. I could hit an 18" bulls eye at 1,000 yards with those peep sights too.

He's one pic of the sight on my Henry. I fitted it a couple of days ago.

There's more in my Henry thread under the show us our 22 page.

Total numpty question or 2 here:
How did you know where to mount it on the barrel... is it just a matter of what works?
Is it just a spot weld on or something?

That little wedge on the bottom at the front of the sight is known as a dovetail, it fits into a groove that is already cut into the barrel.

Fair enough
I can't see a groover or anything there though, which is what had me confused

Geez Steve, that is a "numpty" question all right. LOL

Krat was right. There is a dovetail groove in the barrel from the original rear sight. I removed the old sight and after filing the dovetail on the new sight, was able to knock it into the barrel groove with a hammer.
