What I would be interested in is longer yardage! 200 or 300 yds!! With that much energy loss, what is the result? There are some on this forum, that take shots past 100. So I was just curious as to what "damage" is done farther out!

Good point!  Already planned to do 17 grain vmax @ 200 yards this week.. ie as soon as this freak weather we are having stops.

At 200 and 300 yards the 17 grain vmax bullet would have an energy loss of around 70% and 83% respectively. Assumption for 200 yards is a the vmax bullet retaining almost all it's mass.. how far it penetrates is anybodies guess. At 300 yards the guess is I'll probably accidently shoot the video camera but it should be do-able..  Cheesy

If you could shield the camera with a steel plate of say 4 or 5mm in thickness, you would not have to worry about any shots that miss the mark.

Nah, i was just kidding about the camera, although with a bigger gun like a 308 it's likely the entire assembly will go arse over so might be an idea to put the camera on a tripod a few feet bag from the carnage  Smiley

Yeah good idea. Just set the zoom to the right level and you would still get that nice close in view.

Camera question: you have it set up a few yards away from the target with a zoom, correct? How do you start recording?

Do you start it, then walk back, get your breath, set up, shoot, then walk back to the camera and turn it off? It seems like you would have a lot of nothing happening at the beginning and end of the video. Or do you edit that out later? If so, what software do you use for that?

Or do you have an assistant closer to the camera that you yell at when you are ready, and he turns it on?

For this test the video camera is sitting on the same portable table as the ballistics gel and positioned a few inches away and set  to wide angle.  I started the camera recording manually, ran back to the gun, loaded it, took the shot, then ran back to the camera and shut it down. The excess video footage was edited out in software called 'KINO'  http://www.kinodv.org/ which is free software. The sequence of stills was also created in KINO, although the cameras does have builtin functions to do this. The slowmotion was also done in Kino.

Having the video cam mounted on a tripod set up few yards away is a good idea and insurance against damaging the camera. I should aquire of a tripod for future tests.

Also good insurance against rob's idea of having a person there... nothing like shooting your mate in the guts for research!
