been reloaden fer over fifty years with an RCBS Jr. still works like new. anyhow, a friend of mine bought a Uberti Hi wall in 45-70 and ask me if I would reload them since 50 rounds cost him &69.00. with an RCBS 3 die set, that's the easyest cartridge I ever reloaded and since it's a single shot, no need to crimp. load was 50 gr. of H 4198, A 300 GR HP and a Federal 210 primer. compared to bottle necked cases, that old straight taper case is a delight to reload, so much so, I'm thinking of getting one myself. stay tuned, oh, cost of components to reload 50 rounds, $27.50. BIG DIFFERENCE. diesel.

I bet.
I'd love to get one eventually. A lot of guys over here have 45-70's. They work a treat on anything big and mean. They're popular for use on Buffalo up north and pigs anywhere. Some use them for deer too.

I have a marlin guide gun in 45/70. Love the caliber and agree on the loading...the high wall is an awesome rifle. I loaded some 300g Sierras...

I have the 450 marlin Guide Gun and I truly love that round. I shoot Hornady 350 grain with 53 grains of H4831SC.

The gummy bullets are better for that 100yds + shot, but you have to trim back the case more.

deisel .. if you want look into one of the NEF handi Rifles for a 45/70 ... ALOT of people say if you are into those single shot guns your collection is not complete if you dont own a 45/70

AGREED! Just received my H&R back with the 45-70 barrel fitted, good snug fit. mounted a 2 1/2X Norinco I had laying around. loaded up some virgin brass, Rem. with 55 gr IMR 3031, 300 gr Hornadys, 9 1/2 Rem primers. just about a compressed load, took 'er to the range, after zeroing, 3 shot groups from sand bag rest, never over 1 1/2 in at 50 yds. with those BIG holes, groups looked good to me. it did make me break out my Past recoil pad, though. at 78 years young, I may be getting a little soft. can't wait for deer season, should work real good on 100 lb. whitetalls. we'll see.

ya. any 45-70 gunner best not be too recoil sensitive. the 300 grainer has enough, I can't for see what the 500 gr solids would have. since I don't intend to shoot elephant or cape buff. don't think we have too many in PA anyhow.

I've never shot a 45-70 so I don't know what the recoil is like. So how does it compare to say a 12 gauge? My 12 gauge kicks pretty hard with heavy loads.

depends what the load is. factorys are loaded to be safe in all 45-70s, even the origenal 1873 trapdoors so the recoil is about what a 2 3/4" high brass would be in a 7 1/2 lb O/U. never fired any 500 grs, but I'll bet they would make a 7 lb slide action with 3" slugs fell like 243. diesel

I figured they would be similar. My shotgun is a single barrel Winchester 37A, which is quite light. Certainly much lighter than your typical double. A 12 gauge Winchester Super-X 1oz slug has a muzzle velocity of 1600fps and the 1oz slug is about 440gr. So I figured it would be close to a 300 or 400gr 45-70. I also use 1 1/8oz Winchester Super-X OO-SG buckshot and that is launched at 1450fps. So I figured they would feel something like a 500gr 45-70. That is assuming factory 45-70 loads though.
