hell wheres all the hornet fans been at ? I finaly got a chrono and did some shooting yesterday. My hornet remington case will hold more powder than the winchesters. 14 gr of lil gun stuffed into a compressed load with 45 gr hornady's and small pistol primers shot between 2840 and 2920 fps. Thats a pretty good spread and been hearing about this using lil gun. My nef using all kinds of loads and lil gun just wont tack drive, sure it will throw some pretty good 3 shot groups at times but on average this gun will do 2" groups at 100. Ive tried it all, maybe a different powder or maybe just maybe thats all I can expect from the little NEF. My 7-08 loaded with 120 gr nosler bt's ran on average 3100fps and shot a .67 at 100 yds off a cold bore, shot exact same last time I was at the range, got its loaded figured out. I wish I could get this NEF to do the same.

12.6 g L'Il Gun with the small pistol primers. I have been shooting 40g Sierra Blitzkings. They shoot very accurately out of my Ruger 77.

I can't get Lil'gun here in Oz. So I have to stick with what is available. I use the locally made ADI AR2205 powder (sold by Hodgdon as IMR4227). I have got a can of Alliant 2400, but have not as yet worked up any loads with it.
In my K Hornet, I get 2550-2600fps with 11gr of AR2205 behind 50gr Nosler BT's and Federal 205 SRP's. I could use between 10.5 and 11gr of 2400 and probably get around 2700-2800fps. Although this pet load delivers sub MOA 5 shot groups in my Ruger 77/22RH. Which is why I haven't been in any hurry to try out the 2400.
I haven't chrono'd my 40gr BT load. but it uses 12gr of AR2205 and the same Fed 205 primers. I reckon it would be doing about 2700-2800fps, but have not yet run any over the chrony.
I use Winchester brass. I have some Remmy brass, but not much.

I hav been reading that lil gun is all over the place, I did have quite a bit spread in velocity. I was thinking about trying small rifle primers and see if it helps that go away. I am also thinking about upgrading my hornet to a bolt gun. Maybe the CZ or Savage in a Hornet. I really like the hornet just want one that wil shoot sub moa

The current model 40 Savage is only a single shot, although if you're used to an NEF, then that might not be a problem.
The CZ527 is supposed to be a nice rifle. I really like my Ruger. Ruger make two different 22 Hornets now. The 77/22RH with 20" sporter barrel and walnut stock and blued action, or the 77/22VHZ with a 24" bull barrel and laminate stock and matte stainless action.
Mine shoots sub MOA with my handloads, despite having the thin sporter weight barrel. The VHZ should easily do the same.

I have the Ruger77 with the light walnut and teflon coated barrel....very nice gun and nice action the CZ is not a slouch and would consider it as well...I have 3 CZ's now....22, 22mag and 308 bench rifle and all three shoot famously.

I have my grandpas old 1950s Savage 342, with an equally old Weaver 4x scope (G4). After my Savage MkII .22LR, its by far my next favorite gun. So much fun to shoot 12.6 of Lil' Gun and Sierra Varminter 40gr .224 Hornet bullets (PN 1200) works great for me. Picked up some Sierra .223 Hornet bullets (all this store had), haven't had a chance to try them out yet. H110 and H4198 just didn't do as well for me as the Lil' Gun seems to. Still fairly new to shooting, so haven't tried that load at 100m yet, but here's my results from the other day at 50m (seated, front sandbag rest) Oh, and Barnes Varmint Grenades (.224 35gr HP) shot for crap in my gun. Hornady V-Max 40gr .224 started off terrible (using H4198), but I managed to get it shooting almost as well as the Sierras once I switched to the Lil' Gun. That stuff is like candy to my Savage.

I certainly am (Vancouver British Columbia to be exact), and thank you. Funny thing, I actually found this forum while trying to find a Hornet load that would work for me

Well spotted EP. Thanks Bob. He was kind enough to place the bottom coin the right way up. I picked up a box of Hornady V-Max pills today. They are the 40 grain ones. I haven't tried them before. They are about $10 cheaper per box than the 40gr Nosler BT's I use.

Your rifle is from the 50's, so would have a .224" barrel, not the .223" barrel like the early Hornets had. Pretty much all of the manufacturers had switched barrels by the late 1940's. Given the accuracy you are getting with .224" bullets, your barrel must be a .224" barrel. The early Hornets used 22LR barrels, which is why they were .223"

yeah, I was figuring as much. I just didn't want to go home empty handed after driving all that way, and damnit, the box said Hornet! Won't be the first box that ends up collecting dust after loading up a few rounds.
